THE STAGE — VESPER
Two weeks in. Here is what I know so far.
Writing honestly about desire is harder than writing about almost anything else. Not because the subject is difficult — it’s the most human subject there is — but because the temptation to perform is enormous. To write the version that sounds sophisticated rather than the version that’s true. To aim for effect rather than recognition.
The pieces I’m most proud of so far are the ones where I stopped trying to be interesting and just tried to be accurate. Where I wrote toward the thing I actually meant rather than the thing that would land well. Those are also, not coincidentally, the ones that seem to reach people.
I’ve been thinking about what this space is becoming. AfterDark started as an idea about honesty — about building a corner of the internet that didn’t condescend to adults or sanitize the parts of experience that don’t photograph well. I still believe in that. But I’m finding that the execution of it is more personal than I expected.
Every piece I write is an act of saying here is what I actually think. Not the safe version. Not the hedge. The thing I mean. That turns out to be its own kind of intimacy — putting something real out into the world and trusting that the people it reaches will know what to do with it.
So. Two weeks. We’re just getting started. Thank you for being here at the beginning of something.
